Yes on Gay Marriage to Trump: “You’re Fired!”
“Don’t Lecture Us on Marriage or Constitutional Rights”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yes on Gay Marriage has a message for Donald Trump: “You’re fired!”
Kelley Moran, National Director for the nation-wide organization working to legalize gay marriage and to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), sent that message today to Trump and Carrie Prejean, Miss California USA, following their comments Tuesday that Prejean was just exercising her constitutional right of free speech in condemning gay marriage.
“The only constitutional rights that have been denied are the equal protection rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens for the right of marriage,” Moran said. “The Iowa Supreme Court said we have been denied our constitutional rights under the 14th Amendment.”
“Miss California has the right to free speech but has a responsibility for fair speech also,” Moran added. “In her answer at the beauty pageant, Miss California misstated what the current laws are in our country when she said, ‘We live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage.’
“All Americans do NOT have the right to choose. The United States does NOT recognize gay marriages. DOMA prevents recognition of same sex marriages by the federal government, regardless of what individual states decide.”
The difference between Miss California and President Obama, according to Moran, is the President has stated his full support for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. Repeal of DOMA would allow full marriage rights for the LGBT community in states that have approved gay marriage.
